Here's what we're all about

SCDesign, L.L.C. was founded in the Spring of 2000 by Steven Carruba. I started designing homes while working for Steve Watters, the founder of Sterling Victorian Homes, Inc. and one of the pioneers of the Houston Heights revival.  This is when I discovered my love for traditional design, and my passion for remaining true to the idea while bending it to conform to what is needed today. Steve unfortunately passed away in 1996, a loss not only to me but to all of Houston. Together with his widow, Janie Watters, and Allan Edwards (an excellent builder specializing in beautiful houses in West U. and Bellaire), I helped complete the houses that he left unfinished. That gave me a real knowledge of the basics of home building, above what many architects and designers possess.

I found a need in Houston that I could easily fill: the need for a designer that loves traditional design, but without an ego that gets in the way of the client's vision. I feel no need to be featured in magazines. I am content to know that I had a part in bringing someone else's dream to fruition. That's not to say I don't care about what I draw: if I feel something is ugly, in bad taste, or not appropriate, I will let my feeling be known. Other than that I'm very easy to work with.

I AM NOT AN ARCHITECT. I feel the need to make that clear because I want no misunderstandings. I am qualified to design houses and manage all of the legal and technical aspects of the design and construction of a new home. I am familiar with the entire process from interpreting Building Codes and obtaining Building Permits, to working with the Engineers to design a strong, long lasting, yet economical building. I've taken many classes in design at U of H and have worked with a number of prominent architects in Houston. I have designed over 100 houses since 2000, and was involved in more than 100 others before 2000.  Many of the homes on this website were built by SCDesign, L.L.C. and show the care and expertise that I bring to the process.
